Hill of Crosses, Siauliai April 9, 2012 - Siauliai, Lithuania - Hill of Crosses.The Hill of Crosses, Kryzi. Kalnas, is located near small city of Siauliai. The Lithuanian national sight is visited by many thousands of international pilgrims every year. Tens of thousands of crosses are perched upon a small hill representing Christian devotion. During the Soviet era, the pilgrimage to the Hill of Crosses served as a vital expression of Lithuanian nationalism. The Soviets repeatedly removed Christian crosses in 1961, 1973 and 1975 and the hill was leveled. In 1985, the Hill of Crosses was finally left in peace. Pope John Paul II visited the Hill of Crosses in September of 1993, Siauliai, Lithuania.
